New Jersey State Flower - Purple Violet
The area of New Jersey was part of the original territory of the United States. It was originally chartered in 1664. West Jersey was split from New Jersey in 1676, but they reunited in 1702. New Jersey ratified the U.S. Constitution on December 18, 1787; it was the third of the original 13 states to join the Union, with generally the same boundary as the present state.

County Subdivisions
New Jersey has 571 county subdivisions which are known as minor civil divisions (MCDs). There are 242 townships with functioning, but not necessarily active, governments. The 324 incorporated places in New Jersey are independent of any MCD and serve as county subdivisions. There are also five undefined MCDs representing water area. All areas of the state have a township government except areas within an incorporated place. Each town is governed by a mayor and township committee.
