| History: | The name Surprise Lake refers to the Surprise Mining Company, which in the late 19th century made a significant investment in the processing of gold that was reported to have been found in the area. However, it was later determined that the enterprise was a hoax aimed at boosting local land values. A proposal to change the name of Surprise Lake was rejected by the US BGN in August 2014. |
